Historical Moment for Fiji（フィジーの歴史的瞬間）
Some of you might have known by now that Fiji has finally won it’s first Olympic Gold medal.
First of all, I would like to thank all of those that cheered for Fiji.
Secondly I would just like to give you a small idea of how much this win means to Fiji.
Fiji, just like New Zealand, is a rugby crazy nation, but when it comes to rugby 7’s, Fiji’s craziness takes on a totally different level. I don’t know if there is any other nation in the world that is as passionate about 7’s rugby as Fiji is. When the national team plays the whole nation comes to a stand still.
When the final was played in the Olympics, all of Fiji went into “freeze mode”, as coined by the head coach as the moment when everybody in Fiji drops whatever they are doing and are glued to the TV. No body will be seen on the streets and any form of work is stopped so that the game is watched and the team cheered on.
When Fiji won the Gold, most works closed for the rest of the day and the prime minister of Fiji declared the 22nd of August as a Public holiday to celebrate this humongous achievement.
As stated in a blog of a fellow Fijian and I quote
“To the world Fiji has just won One Gold medal, but to every Fijian , Fiji has just won the Olympics”
